(Orange, CA) – An article by a Santiago Canyon College (SCC) professor has been published in the new book, Persistence is Resistance: Celebrating 50 Years of Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies. Dr. Shereen Siddiqui, associate professor of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies at SCC, wrote the article “Women’s & Gender Studies at Community Colleges: Breakthroughs and Challenges.”

The comprehensive volume covers the history, praxis and implementation of gender, women’s and sexuality studies (GWSS), and was compiled and edited by Dr. Julie Shayne, University of Washington, Bothell. It features a creative collection of essays from a diverse group of scholars, ranging from undergraduate students to faculty emeritus from 22 institutions.

Among those contributors are five SCC students and alumni: Michael Castro, Meranthy Meza, Sophia Moore, Yuval Schnitkes and Cait Selitrennikoff. Their artwork and short testimonials were included in a feature titled “Why GWSS?”

Dr. Doreen Mattingly, professor and chair of the Department of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University, called the book “essential reading” for all who work, study and find meaning and community in GWSS programs and departments.

“I recommend it for [GWSS] courses at all levels,” said Mattingly. “This collection is the comprehensive and creative reflection that the academic discipline of [GWSS] deserves on our 50th Anniversary,” said Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans, professor and director of the Institute for Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University. “This book reflects the founding tenets of creativity, activism, collaboration, and innovative praxis in a way that both affirms and restructures formal scholarly study.”
