(Santa Ana, CA)— The Santa Ana College (SAC) Music Department is hosting a “Faculty and Friends” concert on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Hall Theatre, 1530 W. 17th St., Santa Ana, CA, 92706. The concert is offered free of charge in celebration of the college acquiring a nine-foot Steinway grand piano, thanks to the success of the Friends of Music Steinway Campaign.
The concert will spotlight Dr. Jungwon Jin, SAC assistant professor of music and world-recognized pianist; Dr. Brian Kehlenbach, chair of the college’s music department, composer, classical recitalist and jazz pianist; Bonita Nahoum Jaros, mezzo-soprano and SAC coordinator of institutional effectiveness and assessment; Dr. Sung Ae Lee, SAC adjunct music instructor, pianist-teacher, soloist, chamber musician and competitor; Hoang H. Nguyen, SAC adjunct music instructor and internationally acknowledged solo recitalist and concerto pianist; and Phuong Nguyen, a SAC student majoring in music under Jin’s guidance.
The concert will include Lee performing Alberto Ginastera’s Danzas Argentinas, Phuong Nguyen playing Beethoven’s Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, Hoang Nguyen performing Dutilleux’s Choral and Variations, Jin and Kehlenbach performing works from Schumann’s Dichterliebe accompanying Jaros, and Kehlenbach performing Chopin’s Etude No. 2 and his own work Tango.
“We are looking forward to showcasing our new Steinway piano in this unique concert featuring our college’s own talent,” said Kehlenbach. “As the college celebrates its 100th birthday, we are so pleased to offer our advanced students, guest artists, faculty and staff the opportunity to play on this magnificent instrument that is the overwhelming choice for the world’s greatest pianists.”
The purchase of the Steinway piano was made possible through the generous gifts of the “Friends of SAC Music.” Starting with a $10,000 donation from Wade Francis, president of Unicon Financial Services, Inc., over 50 people donated to the campaign and more than 400 music fans attended fundraising concerts. The campaign reached its goal with a $5,000 donation from Tod and Linda White through the Orange County Community Foundation. With a matching gift from the Santa Ana College Foundation, more than $70,000 was raised within a year.
