Committee reviewed RSCCD safety and security protocols and training regarding use of force, cultural sensitivity and mental health. Sheriff’s Academy curriculum was discussed.
(Santa Ana, CA) – The Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Board of Trustees held a Board Safety & Security Committee Meeting on Wednesday, June 10, 2020. Attendance included RSCCD administrators, student body presidents for Santa Ana College and Santiago Canyon College and representatives from RSCCD faculty and staff.
“Our Board has always believed in and supported access and equity for our students, faculty and staff,” said Board President Claudia Alvarez. “In light of current events, we believe the responsible step is to review our Safety and Security Department’s protocols and training regarding use of force, cultural sensitivity and mental health.”
“We believe it is important to review and understand the training and tools our safety and security officers receive and use while patrolling our campuses and the district office,” said Chancellor Marvin Martinez.
RSCCD, through Santa Ana College, also operates a training academy for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. “We have a responsibility to provide training to many Orange County sheriff cadets. The Board reviewed the academy’s curriculum to ensure it is free from bias and underscores the principles of social justice for all while maintaining safe communities,” said Alvarez.
The committee meeting agenda included presentations from RSCCD Chief Toledo and Sheriff’s Academy directors.
“Our board of trustees and its safety and security committee are dedicated to supporting campus safety and security at all times, ensuring a safe place for our faculty, staff and students to study and achieve their goals.” Said Martinez.
