Rancho Santiago Community College District Holds Public Meeting to Review Hazard Mitigation Earthquake Plan on August 13

(Santa Ana, CA)— A public meeting will be held to review the Rancho Santiago Community College District Hazard Mitigation Plan, earthquake section. The meeting will be held on Thursday, August 13 at 1:30 p.m. at the District Office, located at 2323 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, in the first Floor Board Room (Room 107).

RSCCD has received a $75,000 grant from FEMA to guide the development of a Hazard Mitigation Plan. The goal of this grant program is to provide safer, stronger, protected communities and institutions and to take actions to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and property from natural hazards.

In the coming year, the college district will consider hazard mitigation measures for earthquakes, floods, dam failure, Santa Ana winds, and drought. The first phase of this hazard mitigation plan is the earthquake section, which will be presented to the public at this meeting.

Although community college facilities must meet Field Act standards at the time of construction, the hazard mitigation plan will recommend additional structural improvements that could further mitigate earthquake hazards. The plan will also offer non-structural improvements that could augment safety. Furthermore, suggestions will include training for district staff to prepare them to conduct initial damage assessments following an earthquake. Once approved by the RSCCD Board of Trustees and FEMA, the plan will offer a list of mitigation measures to make the college district facilities safer following earthquakes.

The public is invited to provide feedback on the plan and the list of mitigation measures that the district plans to take to lessen the impact of earthquakes on its facilities. For more information, contact RSCCD Risk Management at (714) 480-7570 or www.rsccd.edu.
