(Santa Ana, CA)— Auditions for Santa Ana College’s cable television news programs, Around and About Orange County (AAOC) and Noticiero Latino del Condado de Orange (NLCO), are scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, at 11:00 a.m. News, sports, and entertainment anchors and reporters are being sought. Auditions will be held at the SAC-TV studios located in the Digital Media Center, 1300 S. Bristol., Room 103, Santa Ana.
No previous broadcasting experience is necessary. However, enrollment in Television/Video Communications course 130: Principles of Broadcast News is required. Behind-the-scenes crew members and on-camera talent are needed for the dual English and Spanish productions seen weekly on Time Warner Cable and on Facebook and YouTube. Candidates need to be available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from February 10 through June 4 when the shows are produced.
“In April, Santa Ana College will finish its year-long 30th anniversary salute to AAOC,” said Terry Bales, professor of TV/Video Communications & Film and department chair. “This spring, we also celebrate the 20th anniversary of NLCO. These celebrations occur at the same time that the college is turning 100 and are great examples of the college’s celebrated past and boundless future.”
Bales, who is retiring on June 6, has been a professor at Santa Ana College since 1971 and has taught over 40,000 students in courses dealing with all aspects of the print and electronic media. These include classes in Film and Television History, Broadcast News Production, Mass Media and Society, Intro to Electronic Media, Print Journalism, and Public Relations. Until 2002, Bales moonlighted as a sports correspondent for ESPN/Sportsticker where he covered over 4,000 major league baseball games and about 1,500 Lakers and Clippers games and about 1,500 Ducks and Kings hockey games.
AAOC is the oldest, continuous running cable show in Orange County. More than 500 alumni of the program have found full-time employment in television and video. Among the program’s alumni are Tannya Boyd Joaquin, a reporter with Hawaii News Now in Honolulu, and Joe Rodriguez, an ESPN producer who produced ABC/ESPN’s coverage of the World Cup.
