(Santa Ana)—The Santa Ana College (SAC) Main Gallery is hosting an exhibit titled “Around the Corner,” spotlighting artists who live and work primarily in Orange County and Los Angeles. This group exhibition will feature work by sculptor Mark Clayton, photographer Domenico Foschi, painter David Michael Lee, and multimedia artist Marciano Martinez.
The exhibition’s opening reception is slated for Thursday, February 20 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the SAC Main Gallery. The show, which is free to the public, will run through April 3. The SAC Main Gallery is located on the Santa Ana College campus, C Building, 1530 W. 17th St., Santa Ana, CA 92706. Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Thursday evenings, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Clayton, a Long Beach resident, is known for creating humorous mixed media sculpture using vintage or found objects. He combines these objects into assemblages that are imaginary, whimsical and often surprising. His work has been featured most recently in the exhibition, “Eye of the Beholder: The Art of the Found Object,” hosted by the Maryland Federation of Art Circle Gallery in Annapolis, MD. His work was also shown in the “28th Annual Made in California Juried Show” hosted by the City of Brea Art Gallery and the “Found Objects Exhibit” hosted by Long Beach Arts.
“The viewer does some of the work here. I rely on him or her to recognize what it is that I have created. There is actually a term for this phenomenon: pareidolia, which means the imagined perception of a pattern or meaning where it does not actually exist,” said Clayton.
Foschi, a Whittier resident, was born in Italy and moved to Los Angeles in 1989 where he has dedicated himself to photography. His work has received numerous awards and been published in magazines such as View Camera, B&W Magazine, and other publications. His photography has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and at galleries in Spain, Italy and the United States.
“Although the kind of photography I do now can easily be classified as street photography, I do not consider myself a street photographer. I have always found labeling, especially in the arts, a detriment to creative freedom, which can lead to a rigid crystallization of the artist’s image in the art world,” said Foschi.
Lee, a Santa Ana resident, is an artist, curator, and art instructor. He was born and raised in Orange County, earned his B.A. from Columbia College in Chicago and his M.F.A. from California State University, Fullerton. He was a resident artist at the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana and worked as a studio assistant to renowned artist Tony Delap. He has since become faculty and curator of Coastline College Art Gallery in Newport Beach. “Spaced Out,” a solo exhibit of his work was hosted by Brett Rubbico Gallery in Newport Beach. Last year, his work was featured in a number of shows, including “Ten Years Drawn” at L2kontemporary in Los Angeles, “Sense and Sensibility I” at the Mt.SAC Art Gallery in Walnut, and the “Summer Group Show” at Brett Rubbico Gallery.
Martinez, a Brea resident, known for his painting, watercolor, oil, and acrylic work, has had a 35-year career as an art instructor at Fullerton College. He has recently retired from teaching to be able to spend more time with his painting. His work has been exhibited in both national and international exhibitions. He befriended and studied with Milford Zornes, a revered California impressionist.
