Production runs from April 13-15
Santa Ana, Calif. – In collaboration with the Santa Ana Theatre Arts Department, Santa Ana College will celebrate reading and writing with a fully staged adaptation of One World: A Global Anthology of Short Stories, April 13-15.
For nine years, SAC has held a Book of the Year program. This year, the production of One will highlight the many voices and stories from around the world in need of being heard.
Seven short stories have been selected by Orange County playwright and SAC adjunct professor William Mittler (Snow Angels, TicklePants, Paradise) for this special weekend of theatre. The text reflects the concept of universal humanity and the inherent need for voices from various backgrounds to be heard. The stories range from love in a suicide chat room to the silence of old age and are told through the use of storytelling, dance, shadow puppetry and song.
“Every voice needs to be heard,” said playwright Mittler. “Every heart needs to be loved. Everyone needs to listen. The purpose of One is to help students find new ways to access literature and be involved in the interpretation of the text.”

The following stories have been adapted: Jhynpa Lahiri’s The Third and Final Continent, Elaine Chiew’s Leng Lui is for Pretty Lady, Henrietta Rose-Innes’ Porcelain, Sequoia Nagmatsu’s Melancholy Nights in a Tokyo Cyber Café, Konstantinos Tzikas’ A Boy and His Kite, Adetokunbo Gbenga Abiola’s The Albino and Martin A. Ramos’ The Way of the Machete.
One leads directly into the launch of playwriting and directing classes at SAC this fall. Next spring, student directors and playwrights will showcase their work in a collaborative production, providing a voice to the community and a place for those voices to be heard.
