(Orange, CA)—The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) electrician program recently received a second place ranking among the top 10 colleges nationwide for electrician degrees from Schools.com.
The data utilized to determine the recognition, complied from the National Center for Education Statistics, included affordability, flexibility and student success. SCC is the only Southern California college to rank within the top five programs.
“We are humbled and excited for this honor and we are thankful for all those wonderful professional instructors and support staff that are the reason for this program’s success,” said Von Lawson, SCC’s dean of Business and Career Technical Education. “We are motivated by this honor to continue providing the best economic and workforce development opportunities for our current and future electrician students.”
The college’s two electrician apprenticeship programs – inside wireman and sound installer – prepare students with thousands of hours of training and college credit to supplement outside instruction. Successful program completion provides students with journeywork status with the state and an associate degree or certificate of achievement through SCC. The programs typically take between three and five years to complete.
The inside wiremen track provides training in installing conduit, electrical wiring, fixtures and electrical apparatus inside commercial buildings within a multitude of industrial settings. The sound installer program prepares students to work on audio, video, multimedia and home and corporate entertainment systems, as well as telephone, fax, modem, Internet, local area networks, paging, intercoms, public address systems and various forms of home and building security, control and automation systems.
SCC additionally offers both an electrician apprenticeship and non-apprenticeship degree and certificate program. In 1970, the State of California began funding classroom instruction for state-registered apprenticeship programs through Related and Supplemental Instruction (RSI) or Montoya Funds, allowing apprentice program students to obtain their training and associated degree at no cost. Apprentice students receive on-the-job training, immediately resulting in a union position with a competitive salary and benefits package.
