(Orange, CA)—The National Science Foundation has awarded $621,913 to support the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Scholars Academy.
“The government and employers are projecting a shortage of qualified workers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” said SCC President John Weispfenning. “SCC is doing its part to identify and prepare students for these careers.”
The grant will provide scholarships to low-income STEM majors and STEM majors from underrepresented groups with a goal of increasing the number who attend full-time. The program is expected to increase participation in STEM support services, increase the number of students who complete their studies with at least a 3.0 grade point average, and increase the participation of underrepresented STEM students in internships.
Jeffrey Wada, SCC assistant professor of chemistry, said the majority of students have to find jobs to fund their education, but the grant will reduce the need for students to work. “Their job will be to focus on their class work,” he said. “The scholarships will have a huge positive impact.”
The grant began on March 15, 2015, and ends February 28, 2019.
SCC is developing a strong reputation for preparing students to go into the STEM fields, according to Wada. This award complements other grants received by the college, including a federal Title V grant for $3.23 million awarded in 2010.
