Santiago Canyon College Presents 2019 International Film Festival

(Orange, CA) - Santiago Canyon College’s (SCC) Modern Languages Department and Associated Student Government invite students and members of the public to attend the 2019 International Film Festival April 19-May 3rd. The festival, held on each of three consecutive Fridays and presented as part of the campus Celebration of Diversity month, showcases three separate films, two of which are presented in a language other than English.

“This is an event that is enjoyed by students, staff and members of the community,” said Lourdes Fajardo, chair of Modern Languages at SCC. “It particularly gives students currently taking languages the opportunity to experience the language outside of the classroom. In addition to experiencing the language, students learn more about the people and its culture through film.”

The festival kicks off on Friday, April 19 with the showing of Pulling Strings.

In the film, Rachel, a diplomate working in Mexico City had a night of drinking and now finds her world turned upside down after she’s saved by Alejandro, a Mariachi singer whose visa was rejected the day before…by Rachel! Presented by SCC’s Spanish Department. (Spanish with English subtitles)

On Friday, April 26 SCC will show A Quiet Place.

In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence. The parents do what it takes to keep their children safe after mysterious creatures that hunt by sound threaten their survival. Presented by SCC’s American Sign Language Department.

Finally, on Friday May 3, the college presents, La Famille Bélier.

A heart-felt comedy about a young girl whose close bond to her hearing-impaired family is challenged by the discovery of an extraordinary talent for music. In the Bélier family, everyone is deaf, except sixteen-year-old Paula. She acts as an indispensable interpreter for her parents and younger brother, especially in the running of the family dairy farm. Her father has decided to run for mayor, spurred on by her vivacious but over-involved mother. Paula’s interests are very much elsewhere. She noticed the handsome new boy at school sign-up for choir, and impulsively joined too. It’s not long before her music teacher discovers her considerable talent. Presented by SCC’s French Department. (French with English subtitles).

Films begin at 6 p.m. in Building D-101, 8045 E. Chapman Ave. in Orange. Parking and admission are free and refreshments will be provided. For more information call (714) 628-4938 or visit www.sccollege.edu/internationalfilmfestival.
