Santiago Canyon College Presents Shakespeare in the Park April 25

(Orange, CA) - Featuring students performing classic Shakespearean scenes, a poetry reading and film screening, Santiago Canyon College (SCC) presents the fifth annual Shakespeare in the Park on April 25, at 5:30 p.m.

“With its genuine sense of community, Shakespeare in the Park is a highlight of the academic year here at Santiago Canyon College,” said SCC English Professor Corinna Evett. “It is amazing to see students take ownership of facilitating an event that provides the community, students, and faculty the opportunity to interact in a casual and celebratory environment.”

An open mic poetry reading sets the stage for the “Twelfth Night”-themed evening, followed by students from SCC’s English 233A “Shakespeare’s Comedies and Romance Plays” performing monologues and scenes from some of Shakespeare’s best-known works. Performances include Heidi Staehling performing Beatrice’s monologue from “Much Ado About Nothing;” Stephanie Aguilar, Destiny Arreola, Tricia Lerfald and Damon Luna acting out a montage of scenes from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream;” Kristen Norton reciting Hermione’s monologue from “The Winter’s Tale” and Alyssa Flynn, Kaitlynn Valeros, Seth Williams, Christian Marshall and Brittany Williams performing a montage of scenes from “Much Ado About Nothing.” Once the selections from Shakespearean plays are complete, the 1996 Trevor Nunn film “Twelfth Night or What You Will” starring Helena Bonham Carter, Imogen Stubbs, Steven Mackintosh and Ben Kingsley will screen beginning at approximately 8 p.m.

Held on the grassy knoll next to the SCC Library and hosted by the SCC English Department, SCC Foundation and SCC Associated Student Government, the fifth annual Shakespeare in the Park is a free, community event. Refreshments, snacks and pizza are provided, and guests are encouraged to bring beach chairs, blankets, jackets and picnic baskets. SCC is at 8045 E. Chapman Ave. in Orange.
