(Orange) - Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Women’s Soccer scored its third state title in program history last weekend.
A header by Haley McDevitt (Irvine, Calif.) in the 66th minute resulted in the 1-0 victory over Lake Tahoe and the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women’s Soccer State Championship on December 2.
“At the beginning of each season, we take the group we have and try to get the best out of them,” said Head Coach Ian Woodhead. “Sometimes that takes us all the way, sometimes it just gets us close. To be honest, it’s the input from Assistant Coaches Lisa Hermen and Christy Medlin who have helped us push on this year from 2017 State Finalists to 2018 State Champions. Also, our athletic training staff under Kelsey Bains, have been hugely influential by going above and beyond to keep our student-athletes on the field.”
The title was a long time coming for SCC, as the program has not taken top honors since 2009 despite the time claiming its 15th straight Orange Empire Conference title in early November. The Hawks ended the season 24-0 (16-0 in league play).
Off the field, SCC’s women’s soccer team was recently awards four California Community Colleges Team Scholastic Achievement Awards and accepted a handful Orange Empire Conference post-season accolades.
“These women rose to every challenge they confronted, regardless of their own personal circumstances and they continue to produce in the classroom. They deserve every accolade they get,” said Woodhead.
“Winning the state championship is an incredible honor for our women’s soccer team and Santiago Canyon College,” said SCC President Dr. John Hernandez. “In addition to their on-the-field accomplishments, the team has been equally successful in the classroom. We couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments.”
