Santa Ana, Calif. – Five Los Angeles street photographers come together to showcase their work in Santa Ana College’s newest exhibit Modern Street Photography, April 7-May 5.
“I wanted to bring together top photographers from the L.A. street scene because I think their subject matter of urban Los Angeles is an aesthetic that visitors to our Santora gallery would appreciate and can relate to,” said Phil Marquez, SAC’s art gallery director. “All five photographers bring their own unique perspective to the show and each pairs well with one another to create a dynamic exhibition.”
The group show features the work of Dana Barschun, Domenico Foschi, Doug McCulloh, Rinzi Ruiz, and Dotan Saguy.
Barshun, a self-taught photographer, has been featured in Layers Magazine, World Street Photographer, The Leica Camera Blog and The Candid Frame, and his work has been seen in solo and group exhibitions both stateside and abroad.
Italian-born Foschi has worked as a freelance commercial photographer in Ravenna, Italy, shooting for magazines, newspapers, the city administration and political parties. Since moving to the United States in 1989, Foschi’s photographs have been seen in View Camera Magazine, B/W Magazine, Silvershotz Magazine, Blow Magazine and Looking Glass Magazine, among others, and his work has been shown at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
McCulloh is best known for system-driving projects that combine surrealist-inspired chance operations with high-volume photography. He is a five-time recipient of funding support from the California Council for the Humanities and his work is part of the collections at LACMA, Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris, Photographic Resource Center in Boston, California Museum of Photography, City of Los Angeles Photo Archive, Laguna Art Museum, Center for the Study of Political Graphics in LA, Huntington Library and Art Collections, Riverside Art Museum, California Water Education Foundation, Southeast Museum of Photography in Florida and University of California Irvine Special Collections and Archives.
Ruiz has said he loves to capture the moment and finds beauty in humanity when “capturing the emotion, the mundane and the art in reality that is everywhere.” In addition to his photography, Ruiz conducts one-on-one street photography workshops and snaps shots for documentaries, real estate and urban landscape.
Born in Israel, Saguy lived in lower Manhattan during 9/11, moved to Los Angeles in 2003, and shifted his career focus to follow his passion of capture images in 2015. Saguy’s award-winning photographs have been published in National Geographic, PDN, Leica Fotografie International, ABC News and is a proud laureate of the Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50.
An opening reception for Modern Street Photography is scheduled for Saturday, April 7 from 7-10 p.m. at the SAC Arts Gallery at the Santora Building, 207 N. Broadway, Ste. Q in Santa Ana. The gallery is open on Fridays from noon - 4 p.m., the first Saturday of the month for the Art Walk from 7-10 p.m. and by appointment.
