(Santa Ana, CA)—On Saturday, November 19, Santa Ana College (SAC) will hold its 20th annual “Road to Teaching” conference for high school, community college, and university students who have an interest in K-12 teaching. It is also open to members of the community. Co-sponsored by SAC, California State University, Fullerton, and Fullerton College, the conference offers over 25 workshops across a wide range of teaching-related topics.
“The Road to Teaching conference gives participants an opportunity to experience what teachers do best — motivate, inspire, and engage,” says Dr. Mary Funaoka, conference keynote speaker and SAC assistant professor of human development and education studies. “It is a day to be reminded of the power of our profession and learn from those who continue to ‘choose’ to make an impact every single day.”
Workshop topics include technology in teaching, teaching and learning strategies, attaining a teaching position, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), among others. Technology workshops include using tablets, Google Drive, and using Web 2.0 in instruction. Learning strategy workshops include how to use collaboration, strategies for introducing culture and diversity into the classroom, how to engage students, active engagement, and using picture books to stimulate critical thinking. STEM topics include how to use engineer design process in the classroom, getting to the core of mathematics, “talking” numbers, and coding through robotics.
SAC student Ana Cordova says, “Going to this conference was one of the best decisions I’ve made! I met other students here at SAC who are also planning to become teachers and I became friends with them and we networked and talked about other helpful programs on campus, even joining the future teachers’ club on campus. During the workshops I learned about interesting topics such as the interview process, bilingual teaching, even yoga instruction. The conference is very helpful.”
Steve Bautista, SAC counselor/coordinator of the Center for Teacher Education, describes the core issue the conference addresses, “Becoming a teacher is one of the most important decisions someone can make in their lives. Teachers make an impact on the future. Our state and local communities need excellent and dedicated individuals who are willing to use their gifts and talents to help educate the future.”
The conference also offers an educational fair, and breakfast and lunch are provided for attendees. Currently, registration is at capacity, but space may become available and there will also be limited onsite registration.
