Santiago Canyon College Hires Three New Coaches for Three New Athletic Teams

(Orange, CA)—Santiago Canyon College (SCC) appointed three new coaches, Doug Kawa, Timothy Johnson, and Todd Dixon. The new coaches will head three new athletic programs at SCC - women’s volleyball, men’s volleyball, and men’s basketball.

Kawa, an Eastvale resident, brings over seven years of experience to coach the women’s volleyball team. Previously, he was the assistant coach at Fullerton College, where he helped coach the team to three CCCAA playoff experiences. Prior to that, he was a volunteer assistant for the women’s volleyball program at Fullerton College and prior to that, he was head coach for the varsity volleyball team at Sunny Hills High School. In 2011, he led the team to their first CIF playoff in almost a decade. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Johnson, a Fountain Valley resident, brings 17 years of experience as SCC’s men’s volleyball coach. Previously, he was a head coach and trainer for USA Volleyball where he helped coach the Pan American Cup team to win a gold against Argentina and he helped train the USA team for the World University Games where the team won the bronze medal. Prior to that, he was the head men’s volleyball coach at Hope International University. Previously, he was the assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team at Golden West College. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Long Beach.

Dixon, a Lake Forest resident, brings 28 years of experience to SCC as the new men’s basketball coach. Previously, he was head varsity basketball coach for El Toro High School for 20 years. He has led the team to win 10 league championships, finals for CIF three times, and an average of 21 wins per season. Prior to that, he was the assistant basketball coach at Vanguard University. Earlier, he was the assistant varsity basketball coach and lower level head basketball coach at Santa Margarita High School. He graduated magna cum laude from Vanguard University with a bachelor’s degree in diversified studies with a business minor and earned a master’s in education from Azusa Pacific.

SCC kicked off its women’s volleyball program on September 2; its men’s volleyball program will kick in spring 2017, and its men’s basketball program will launch in fall 2017. For more information, visit www.sccollege.edu/athletics or call (714) 628-4816.
