SCC is in 5th place in the Battle of the Bald
WHAT:
Santiago Canyon College (SCC) and Associate Professor of Communication Jared Kubicka-Miller’s group dynamics class invite you to help conquer childhood cancer at a “Shave-a-thon.” Because children with cancer often lose their hair during treatment, “shavees” show their support by shaving their heads voluntarily. They collect money from friends and family and show up to take their turn in the barber’s chair. SCC’s goal is to raise $24,000, of which the college has already raised $10,373. Colleges nationwide are competing in the #BattleOfTheBald to see which college can raise the most money for childhood cancer research. SCC is currently sitting in fifth place. The competition ends on Nov. 30. This is the seventh year that SCC has hosted a St. Baldrick’s “Shave-a-thon.” The public may participate as “shavees” or by making a financial donation.
In addition, SCC is partnering with Be The Match and inviting people to show up to join the official bone marrow donor registry. It’s simple. All prospective donors will need to do is have their cheeks swabbed.

Over 100 SCC students, faculty, staff, and community members are expected to become “shavees.”
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-powered charity dedicated to raising money for lifesaving childhood cancer research and funds more in childhood cancer grants than any organization except for the U.S. government. St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events in 2013, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research. Events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls, military bases, firehouses and any other place you can imagine.
WHY:
For Kubicka-Miller, this event is driven by a personal passion. He started holding these annual events as a memorial for his brother, Scott Buehler, who died unexpectedly in 2008. St. Baldrick’s was Buehler’s favorite charity. One year ago, Kubicka-Miller’s wife, Tara Kubicka-Miller, was diagnosed with leukemia. After months of chemotherapy and radiation, a bone marrow match was found for her. For this reason, the bone marrow registration drive has been added to this year’s event. Tara, who is also a communication instructor at SCC, plans on returning to teaching this spring.

- Before they turn 20, about 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will have cancer.
