SCC Offers Free Year-Round Vocational Certificates

​(Orange, CA)—The Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Division of Continuing Education offers free, noncredit courses year-round to help adults obtain career technical education certificates. These certificates can easily be obtained within one year to open the door for several in-demand career fields.

The programs are available during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Adults can sign up for these courses at any point in time as long as there is space and they can also leave the program at any point in time. SCC offers certificates in medical billing; multimedia artists and animators; and web associate. Each program is set up so that adults get the needed knowledge and skills to work in the field.

Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims with health insurance companies in order to receive payment for services provided by a healthcare provider. The medical billing vocational certificate program teaches the necessary skills to hold a position in medical billing. Practical experience using medical billing software, Allscript, as well as familiarization with rules and regulations of healthcare plans are also covered.

To obtain this certificate adults are required to take three courses: workforce readiness; introduction to medical billing; and introduction to keyboarding and basic windows. All of this work comes to a total of 240 hours required receive the certificate. Similar programs offered elsewhere cost anywhere from $350 to $3,500.

The multimedia artists and animators vocational certificate allows students to develop technical and creative skills and knowledge that are necessary to find employment in a range of environments including television, movies, video games, and other forms of media. Through the courses students learn how to proficiently operate digital cameras, video cameras, and 2-D/3-D animation software. They also learn to use Windows-based programs utilized in this field.

To obtain the multimedia artists and animators certificate adults take a total of five courses: introduction to use of digital cameras, introduction to 3-D modeling, introduction to 3-D animation, introduction to desktop video editing using Adobe Premiere, and introduction to animations using Adobe Edge Animate. This work totals 300 hours. Similar programs offered elsewhere cost from $2,000 to $3,000 and more.

A Web associate essentially can design and maintain websites. Web associates can work for companies as employees or they can freelance. This vocational certificate will teach adults to use Adobe Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Students will learn to create, publish and maintain websites. Adults will be taught how to protect their privacy, develop search techniques, selling techniques, secure payment methods, and protecting consumer rights. They will also learn HTML; design elements; graphic images; and video and audio formats for web pages.

To complete the web associate certification, adults will take five courses: introduction to web design using Adobe Dreamweaver, introduction to personal commerce on the Internet, introduction to vector graphics using Adobe Illustrator, introduction to web page development using HTML, and introduction to electronic imaging using Adobe Photoshop. All of this work requires 300 hours to finish. Similar programs offered elsewhere charge anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000.
