Santiago Canyon College Recognized for a Third Consecutive Year as a Great College to Work For®

The Chronicle of Higher Education Places Orange College on Its Honor Roll

(Orange, CA)—Santiago Canyon College (SCC) is a great college to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education, a top trade publication for colleges and universities.

The results released on July 17 in The Chronicle’s tenth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of 232 colleges and universities: 155 four-year colleges (89 private and 66 public), and 77 two-year colleges. All accredited institutions in the United States with an enrollment of at least 500 were invited to participate, at no cost.

Only 79 of the institutions that applied for the program achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition. Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with Santiago Canyon College included among the large colleges and universities with 10,000 or more students. SCC received this designation for the third consecutive year.

Santiago Canyon College was also named as one of 42 institutions recognized as “Great Colleges to Work for Honor Roll” for the third consecutive year. For two-year colleges, Honor Roll status was awarded to the only four institutions that were cited most often in each size category.

This designation honors the institutions that The Chronicle considers as the “best of the best”. The colleges recognized with this honor continually received high marks across all survey categories.

“At Santiago Canyon College, we believe what happens here matters. We work collaboratively to provide a workplace where everyone feels respected and valued. Our employees take great pride and joy in working here because they believe that what we do makes a difference. The results of this survey once again affirm a collegial atmosphere and a high degree of collaboration,” said John Hernandez, Ph.D., SCC president. “This award is especially significant because it is the third time in three years that SCC has earned this prestige.”

“Ten years in, the Great Colleges to Work For® distinction is well-known by academic jobseekers as a sign that an institution’s employees are valued and given opportunities for growth even when they face financial constraints,” said Liz McMillen, editor of The Chronicle. “Any college or university that’s on the list is showing that they emphasize one of their most valuable assets: their faculty and staff.”

Based on survey results, SCC was recognized in the following nine categories:

    • Collaborative governance
    • Compensation and benefits
    • Confidence in senior leadership
    • Facilities, workspace, and security
    • Job satisfaction
    • Professional and career development programs
    • Respect and appreciation
    • Supervisor/department chair relationships
    • Teaching environment (faculty only)

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in determining whether to recognize an institution was employee feedback.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.

“It’s easier to be a great workplace during good times, but it’s when times are tough that the commitment to workplace quality gets tested,” said Richard K. Boyer, principal and managing partner, ModernThink LLC. “And those institutions that measure up during times of economic hardship reinforce their already strong cultures and put even more distance between them and their peer institutions for whom they compete for talent.”

Great Places to Work For® is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. For more information and to view all the results of the survey, visit The Chronicle’s website at www.chronicle.com.
