Santiago Canyon College to Host Artist and Activist Felicia Montes in Celebration of Women’s History Month on March 29

​WHAT:

Santiago Canyon College (SCC) will host Mujeres de Maiz (Women of the Corn) presenting “Movemynt Pains: Dealing with Sexism in Social Justice Circles” with Felicia Montes, co-founder and coordinating member. The workshop is a beginning dialogue regarding sexism, gender politics, and issues within movement organizing. A sharing of resources will begin to not only challenge the patriarchy, but also to flesh out and embody feminism and create spaces of healing and empowerment of all peoples. She translates her passion for art and social justice to educate, empower and transform others.

WHO:

Montes is a Xicana Indigenous artist, activist, academic, community and event organizer, educator, designer, poet, performer, professor living and working in the Los Angeles area. She believes art is a tool for education, empowerment and transformation and has translated her passion for art and social justice as co-founder and coordinating member of two groundbreaking creative women’s collectives, Mujeres de Maiz and In Lak Ech.

COST:

This workshop is free and open to the public. Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking without a permit will be cited. Visitors can purchase a $2 daily parking permit allowing parking in any lot for the day.

WHY:

This workshop will familiarize students with contemporary women’s issues, local feminist organizations, and activism. Muejers de Maiz is a creative inter-cultural, intergenerational, and interdisciplinary women’s collective that has made that creative space translate by sharing their own specific blend of mind, body, spirit and cultural work.
