Santiago Canyon College to Host Seventh Annual Foster Youth College Fair on February 20

(Orange, CA)— Santiago Canyon College (SCC) is set to host the seventh annual Foster Youth College Fair in partnership with Orange County Department of Education, Saturday, February 20 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Santiago Canyon College is located at 8045 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange, CA, 92869.

Event check-in will be located in front of the “H” building from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Activities and presentations will be sprinkled throughout the campus. Participants will proceed from the “H” Building to the “S” Building to the Lorenzo A. Ramirez Library and conclude with the “E” Building.

The morning will get underway with a free breakfast for all participants. The Honorable Maria Hernandez, Juvenile Court presiding judge, Superior Court of Orange County, will provide the keynote address. Foster youth currently attending college will be available to answer questions. Representatives from the UCs, the Cal States, and community colleges are expected to be on hand to discuss programs offered at their respective institutions. College-bound foster youth can explore career and college options at the resource fair. Opportunity drawings will occur throughout the event. A tour of SCC is also available for those who want to visit the college campus.

“This event is significant in that it is paramount to the future of this special population. Our foster youth are too often invisible as a result of the systems created for them without their input,” said Loretta Jordan, SCC associate dean of student development. “Consequently, it is incumbent of us, the educators, to ensure our communities are aware of the needs of these youth and how best to support and alter their destinies by moving the needle of their life’s barometer. An event such as this is a step in the direction of change.”

Current foster youth, ages 12-19, and their caregivers are welcome to attend this free event. To register, visit http://fosteryouthcollegeandcareerfair2016.eventbrite.com/. The last day to register is Saturday, February 20; walk-ins are welcome.
