(Santa Ana, CA)—The Santa Ana College (SAC) Digital Media Center (DMC) is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Thursday, November 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the DMC. The center is located at 1300 S. Bristol St., Santa Ana, CA, 92704. The event will include an anniversary ceremony, a showcase of current DMC business incubator residents and instructional programs, a reunion of previous DMC business incubator start-ups, and a variety of tours.
The anniversary ceremony will begin with welcoming remarks from DMC Director Gustavo Chamorro, followed by the Department Chair of Television & Video Communication Michael Taylor, SAC TV/video student Adan Servin, business incubator resident and CEO of Reazon Systems, Inc. Ramesh Sabetiashraf and Rancho Santiago Community College District Board of Trustees President Claudia Alvarez. Networking, refreshments and tours of the SAC-TV studio, digital media arts and digital music instructional spaces, and the business incubator will follow the ceremony.
In its short but eventful history, the DMC has served as a business incubator hosting 82 start-up companies that have created over 200 jobs and helped the Orange County economy grow. It has also been a cutting-edge instructional space and studio for the award-winning SAC Television/Video Communications Program. The DMC has provided a state-of-the-art learning environment for the SAC digital media arts and digital music programs, computer graphics, and animation for video and television scriptwriting. Students can earn associate degrees and vocational certificates in a wide range of digital fields including graphic design, 3D animation, digital media arts studies and digital music. Other programs include television production, broadcast journalism, computer graphics and animation for video, and television scriptwriting.
SAC DMC students benefit from close interaction with companies located in the Digital Media Center's Business Incubator. Many students in the program have been hired as freelancers to work on complete brand identity campaigns including print, web and mobile applications.
SAC student Adan Servin, who has completed a certificate in TV/Video Television Production and is working on a second certificate says, “The center has helped me step out of my comfort zone, meaning going out to different locations to shoot for SAC News. The center has also assisted by connecting with local and non-local reporters and producers. The center is a haven, meaning that the friends I made will be my future colleagues. The DMC has also granted me the opportunity to have a current internship with PBS SoCal.”
The DMC was borne out of collaboration between Rancho Santiago Community College District, SAC, the City of Santa Ana, and the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration. The City of Santa Ana donated 1.2 acres of land to house a 28,000-square-foot facility and the project was funded through a $1.6 million U.S. Department of Commerce grant and Measure E bond unds. SAC classes taught at the facility prepare students for lucrative careers in the digital media industries.
