RSCCD Celebrates Black History Month

As Black History Month unfolds across the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD), Santa Ana College (SAC) and Santiago Canyon College (SCC) stand as inclusive hubs of celebration and unity. Through a variety of events and initiatives, both campuses have come together to honor Black culture, heritage and achievement.

Throughout the month SCC has a series of events, including daily emails featuring prominent Black history legends, special library resources, presentations, community engagement, and culminating with an exhibit all aimed at educating and inspiring students and the community at large.

Dr. Loretta Jordan, Assistant Vice President of Student Services at SCC, highlights SCC's mission of fostering unity and belonging among all student populations. “The goal of SCC is to embrace all student populations to share the richness of our collective cultures and experiences, with a goal of creating a community of belonging for everyone."

At SCC, this commitment is deeply rooted in the college's identity. The campus established the Black Legacy Achievement Center of Knowledge (B.L.A.C.K) in August 2022, with RSCCD Chancellor Marvin Martinez as a driving force behind this initiative. B.L.A.C.K serves as a welcoming space for cultural expression and community-building.

Over at SAC, the celebration of Black History Month is characterized by collaborative efforts among faculty, staff, managers, and students. The college's events feature distinguished keynote speakers, captivating performances, and insightful workshops addressing relevant topics such as black trauma and financial literacy.

Additionally, SAC has forged partnerships with esteemed local Black organizations, further amplifying their voices and services within the community. SAC also ensures that any festivity for Black History Month is catered by local Black-owned businesses.

As SCC and SAC come together to honor Black history and culture, they reaffirm their commitment to fostering environments where diversity is celebrated, achievements are recognized, and voices are amplified. The Rancho Santiago Community College District stands united in its mission to honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape a more inclusive future for all.
