Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Child Development Services Tips for Reading Aloud to Children

(Santa Ana, CA)—When Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Trustees visits the Santa Ana College Early Childhood Education Center on December 15, they will read aloud to children, who are students at the lab school. Following the reading, they will visit classrooms and present a gift book to each child. Included with that book will be a card which includes the following tips for reading aloud to children for parents:

    • Read to children from birth-short board books are best for babies.
    • Take children to the library or store to choose a book.
    • Find a quiet comfortable place to read-make sure your child can see the pictures.
    • Select books with great pictures and rhyming words to engage children.
    • Read a variety of books, but repeat favorites.
    • Use enthusiasm and expression when reading-use sounds and gestures.
    • Explain some new words that your child may not have heard before.
    • Alter stories by putting in your child’s name.
    • Read slowly to allow children to build a mental picture of the story.
    • Encourage children to turn the pages of the book.
    • Ask question and have children make predictions about the story.
    • Limit the amount of time your children watch television; read to a child instead.
    • Read every day to children—make reading a habit!

These additional resources will also be provided for parents:
