(Santa Ana, CA) – Officials in the Rancho Santiago Community College District are applauding the United States Supreme Court decision about the country’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. In a 5-4 vote, the Court ruled in favor of continuing the DACA program providing hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients with temporary relief.
“While we know this is a reprieve, we celebrate the Supreme Court’s ruling this morning,” said Claudia C. Alvarez, president of the Board of Trustees. “We have more than 3,400 DACA students at Santa Ana College and Santiago Canyon College who are working toward achieving their educational goals in the only home country they have ever known. We are honored to be their colleges of choice and we pledge to continue supporting them and all of our students in their academic endeavors.”
As part of their decision, the Court remanded the program to the Department of Homeland Security for further review. “We are taking time to celebrate this decision today, however, this fight is not over,” said Marvin Martinez, Rancho Santiago Community College District Chancellor. “We will not stop advocating for our Dreamers, our most vulnerable students and community members. We are in this for the long haul.”
