This FREE event will be open to the general public for the first time ever!
(Orange, CA)— Santiago Canyon College (SCC) is excited to host Community Science Night 2018 along with the Orange Unified School District (OUSD) for the thirteenth consecutive year. Additionally, this is the first year that this event will be open to the entire public. All members of the community, as well as members of the media are invited to attend the largest event to date.
Community Science Night will be held at Santiago Canyon College in Orange on Friday, March 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 60 planned events, numerous showcases, hands-on activities, demonstrations and fun for the entire family. Food trucks will be on site so that guests may purchase dinner and/or snacks and beverages.
With specific activities geared-toward school-aged children from kindergarten through eighth grade, Community Science Night continues to expand and will feature something for everyone, again incorporating STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math – into a fun-filled, activity-packed evening. OUSD students will hold an art showcase in the gym, and also provide musical entertainment with a jazz band. Plus, the popular Robotics Showcase makes its return in the gymnasium featuring creations and demonstrations by local school students. The Maker’s Challenge will also be on display, in which students will unveil their own designs and innovations.
Other highlights this year will include local companies and agencies hosting big demonstrations, including the Orange County Sheriff’s Department with their crime lab and bloodhounds, the U.S. Military Recruiting Center and the Strong Workforce Program (Career Education) participants.
Guests will have the opportunity to explore hands-on science-based experiments with their families. Children will learn how to build a lava lamp, see cool bugs, local plants and beautiful gems. Families will learn the mechanics of paper airplane folding, have fun with astronomy, visit Underwater World, or watch the Chemistry Magic Show. They will see themselves through an infrared camera, learn about music production, make a jitterbot, climb aboard a real Humvee; and even put their DNA on a necklace to take home!
There will be numerous opportunities for hands-on building as well, including straw planes and rockets, exploding boomerangs, world-class “magnetic” slime, glitter slime, artificial snow, marshmallow catapults and circuits and motors that turn on lights and buzzers. Guests can read to Canine Literacy Therapy Dogs with the OCSPCA or fuel their competitive spirit at the Can Roll Competition. They can visit Playing CSI to win prizes, hurl projectiles towards targets while learning about catapult launchers, see how science meets hockey, or take part in the snail races – or, the first ever Cockroach Olympics race. Kids can even have their picture taken with Star Wars Characters courtesy of the 501st and Rebel Legions!
This year, no tickets are needed. Simply come to Community Science Night on the campus of SCC located at 8045 E. Chapman Ave. in Orange and check-in at one of the tables. Guests will receive a wristband, bag, and a brochure detailing the numerous activities. Wristbands will be required to enter campus buildings where the activities will take place.
The Community Science Night brought in over 3,000 kids and parents last year and as this exciting event continues to expand and evolve Santiago Canyon College expects anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 attendees this year.
This event would not be possible without the community volunteer support of local businesses and agencies, along with support from the faculty, staff and students from both SCC and OUSD. Over 70 faculty and staff and 230 students from SCC have volunteered to help. OUSD will be bringing in over 100 volunteers, and almost 80 members of the area business community have also signed on to volunteer.
In addition, SCC will be hosting 30 of the planned activities, OUSD will host 10, OUSD high schools will host 4, and outside companies will host a total of 17 activities at this year’s event.
