Aftermath: Resonance of War, Loss and Displacement
(Santa Ana, CA)—When words and photographs can’t express the internal feelings a veteran soldier holds within, art can be a powerful means of expression. Santa Ana College will feature the work of four artists: Samira Yamin, Amber Hoy, Sara Dehghan and Gerald Sheffield, when it opens the show Aftermath: Resonance of War, Loss and Displacement at the Santora Gallery on Saturday, October 1.
SAC Gallery Director Phil Marquez, invited adjunct faculty member Joe deVera, to curate this exhibition. With special thanks to the KCETLink Media Group, the featured artists reveal through their work, the very personal experiences and memories of war. DeVera explains, “War displaces lives and creates untold suffering in its wake.”
Through the lens of the four artists, using various media, the exhibition attempts to bring a multilateral view of human conflict into critical discourse. Though the artists have disparate practices, they share a similar biographical thread, in that they have all experienced the current geo-political crisis firsthand. Through intimate personal narratives told through art and art objects, the exhibition not only examines the effects of tragedy and displacement at ground level, but also aids in understanding war in a vital and contemporary light.
An opening reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Saturday, October 1, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the SAC Arts Gallery at the Santora Building, 207 N. Broadway, Suite Q, in Santa Ana. The show runs through Saturday, November 5. Gallery hours are: Fridays from noon to 4:00 p.m., First Saturday Artwalks from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and by appointment.
