WHAT:
The 19th Annual Road to Teaching Conference offers over 25 workshops on a range of topics including: iPad invasion in the classroom, bilingual education, gamification in education, common core reading and writing through the arts, active learning strategies, getting to the core of mathematics, group dialogue and collaboration, next generation science standards, marketing yourself to land a teaching position, and a panel of new and veteran teachers. The one-day conference is tailor made for high school and college students who are considering a career in teaching. The event includes lunch and an educational fair.

300 college and high school students considering a career in teaching.
Keynote speaker is Maggie Mabery, a Manhattan Beach Middle School science teacher, and one of the 2015 California Teachers of the Year. She is widely lauded for a classroom style that engages her students in science. She emphasizes the effect science has on her students’ daily lives. She previously was named Manhattan Beach Unified School District Teacher of the Year and one of 16 Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a minor in science from Iowa State University and her master’s degree in education administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills.
WHY:
According to the U.S. Department of Labor,employment of preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers is projected to grow as fast as average jobs in the U.S. Job prospects are expected to be favorable, with more opportunities for teachers in high-demand fields like math, science, and bilingual education, or in high-need urban or rural school districts. The employment of teachers is expected to grow by 12 percent before 2016. Because of large number of the occupations in this group, this growth rate will create 479,000 additional teacher positions.

This conference is funded by the U.S. Department of Education ENGAGE in STEM Grant and presented byCalifornia State University, Fullerton; Fullerton College; and Santa Ana College.
