Continue Learning with Santiago Canyon College Older Adult Program

(Orange, CA) - Santiago Canyon College (SCC) Older Adult program allows retired adults to learn new things and gain a stronger sense of community. All classes are free.

One older adult education course called “Famous People and Places” is taught by Nancy Parent, Older Adult Instructor and Coordinator. In this course, Parent begins the class by asking what students know or remember about the subject for that day. Then she lectures and uses documentaries to show the subject in a new light. She has taught at multiple colleges in older adult programs for 18 years. Parent said, “It’s one of those things that I never thought I would do, but it’s been such a blessing.”

Parent recalled a moment from a class she taught recently on Franklin D. Roosevelt. One of her students recounted that her mom had voted for FDR. When she was 10 years old, she and her mom were in attendance as he passed through their town during one of his famous whistle-stop tours. During this visit, he had his car stop and called her up to the car. When she walked up he gave her a piece of chocolate, which she says she never ate.

Another course offered is Creative Cooking for Older Adults focusing on health and nutrition. In this course, instructor Judy Schindelbeck covers everything from the five food groups to cleaning and sanitation to what has changed in the cooking world. With this course, Schindelbeck hopes that her students learn what has changed in the cooking world and better understand new terms and kitchen utensils to make a good decision in the kitchen. She says, “Every smell, every taste can bring memories back to the students and that’s an amazing sight to see.”
