​WHAT:

Santiago Canyon College (SCC) will host “Outside the Box: Filipino Americans, Race, and Sexual Identity” with Dr. Anthony Ocampo.

Ocampo is a scholar and writer who focuses on race, immigration, and the experiences of gay men of color. He is assistant professor of sociology at Cal Poly Pomona and a Ford Foundation Fellow. He authored The Latinos of Asia: How Filipino Americans Break the Rules of Race which was recently featured on NPR Morning Edition. His book focuses on Filipino Americans who trace their roots back to Asia and share many characteristics with Latinos. He draws on the voices of Filipino Americans to demonstrate how the shifting demographics in the U.S. change how immigrants and their children understand race. Ocampo is working on a second book, To Be Brown and Gay in L.A.

WHY:

Ocampo’s presentation will touch upon the immigrant experience of Filipino Americans and experiences of gay men of color. The audience will be given information for later reflection and application by weaving narratives from interviews and recent data together to tell a story.

COST:

The lecture is free and open to the public. Seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking without a permit will be cited. Visitors can purchase a $2 daily parking permit allowing parking in any student lot for the day.
