Juneteenth

As we honor the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, we invite you to celebrate with us on Wednesday, June 18, at the District Office for Juneteenth: Joy Jook Joint.  A jook joint (also spelled juke joint) was an informal, often rural, Southern establishment primarily operated by and for African Americans during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These venues offered a space for music, dancing, and socializing—especially in areas where Black communities had limited access to mainstream entertainment due to segregation.
Jook Joints were known for their lively atmosphere, featuring blues, jazz, and later, early rock 'n' roll. They played a vital role in the development of African American musical culture and were often seen as places of both release and resistance.
This special event will feature guest speaker and joy expert Thea Monyeé, who will moderate a powerful panel of RSCCD stakeholders centered on Black joy and liberation. Enjoy traditional Juneteenth food, including BBQ, red drinks, and desserts, plus live music from J. Mike and Friends.
